Oswestry & Border History & Archaeology Group, usually known as OBHAG, is an active and friendly group with a wide appeal to anyone interested in the history and heritage of this area. Our programme encompasses a broad range of archaeological and historical topics, and members are actively engaged in a variety of projects and initiatives.

OBHAG’s origins can be traced to mid-1970s when the discovery of a substantial Roman marching camp at Rhyn Park, St Martins, by Professor Barri Jones of Manchester University ignited enthusiasm, and drew together some like-minded people. Almost forty years later the group is still going strong, with around one hundred members, and with more joining each year. Some of OBHAG’s many achievements are listed below, and we hope there will be more to come. A recent innovation allows members to apply to the group for small amounts of funding to support their particular project.

Meetings with talks are held at 7.30 pm on the second Friday of the month in the Memorial Hall, Oswestry, and non-members are welcome. In the early summer there are two evening visits to local places of interest and in July a day long trip with an expert guide; recent venues include Lichfield, Wigmore Castle and Leominster Priory and Mellor Mill, Stockport.

So for all those interested in our local history and heritage, Oswestry & Border History & Archaeology Group offers a very warm welcome. There is up to date information and membership application forms on our website.
