Archaeology is part of the School of Historical Studies along with Classics and History, situated in the heart of the bustling city of Newcastle. They offer degrees in Archaeology, Bioarchaeological Science, and Ancient History and Archaeology, as well as postgraduate study.

What they say:

Archaeology at Newcastle University has a long and distinguished international reputation for its research and teaching. We are based in the Armstrong Building, at the very heart of the University.

Undergraduate study in Archaeology covers a wide range of topics from later prehistory to the modern world, as well as practical teaching including fieldwork, artefact studies and the identification of bones. We offer a Single Honours degree in Archaeology, a Joint Honours Degree in Ancient History & Archaeology, Archaeology & History. The joint programmes are very popular – Newcastle is one of the very few universities to teach not only Greek and Roman archaeology but also Late Antique and Byzantine archaeology as well as archaeology combined with history.

What we say:

Archaeologists at Newcastle benefit from an exceptional location, an on-campus museum with internationally important archaeological collections, and teaching by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Artefact Studies. They offer a variety of archaeology degrees, and encourage students to take advantage of work placement options. The Department benefits from an association with the Great North Museum.
