1 min read

Bonus Activity: Sunday 10 March

Attendees of CA Live 2019! are welcome to join archaeologists from the Thames Discovery Programme for a guided walk to explore the archaeological remains on the Thames Foreshore in London. We will be running two 90-minute walks for CA Live! delegates, both starting at 10.30am, one exploring the north bank of the river and one the south.

City of London Foreshore walk: Discover the archaeology of the historic waterfront at the heart of the City of London, from its Roman origins to the Victorian period.

Bankside Foreshore walk: Explore the history and archaeology of London’s suburban South Bank at one of London’s most iconic beaches, from Tudor theatres to 20th-century industry.

Places are strictly limited and must be booked in advance – they will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Please call 020 8819 5580 for more information and to secure your spot, specifying which of the two walks you would like to join.

Further Information: The foreshore surface can be uneven and muddy – please wear sturdy footwear; boots or wellies are recommended! Access to the foreshore is by river stairs which do not have a handrail, and many people find walking sticks or poles helpful for walking on the foreshore. In case of inclement weather, the walks may be postponed or cancelled.

The Thames Discovery Programme leads regular guided walks on the foreshore for adults, and families with older children and teenagers. These walks focus on the history and heritage of the river including structures and features exposed by the movement of sediment in this dynamic environment, which are monitored and archaeologically recorded by the Foreshore Recording and Observation Group (FROG). Some surface-only artefact handling may be permitted when attending a TDP foreshore walk, but all finds must be examined by the archaeologist on site, and significant artefacts must be recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Please be aware that if you wish to regularly search the foreshore for artefacts at other times you must be in possession of a Permit to Search the Foreshore, issued by the Port of London Authority.
