Vicus

1 min read

An Iron Age and early Roman re-enactment society that interprets history through the medium of experimental archaeology, reconstruction and living history. A ‘Vicus’ is a settlement that grows outside of Roman military bases to cater to the needs of the soldiers (and their money), Likely to have originally been of a temporary nature, these settlements quickly grow into communities and later into permanent towns. The Society looks to simulate this aspect where the Roman and British cultures merge. Always looking for new recruits. Family orientated and membership open to everyone. One of the few societies that accepts both Romans and Britons and combines living history and combat for this period and the only UK society that allows women into the Roman units.

  1. Hi I am a member of Christ Church Anglican church in Colchester and looking to borrow/hire a few articles for a prayer space weekend 8th to 10th July. On the bible in Ephesians it speaks of the armour of God and we are in need of a soldiers helmet and breastplate of some sort. We have a ‘toy’ sword and shield though they are slightly small. We wondered if you may be able to help us. The items would be secure as there would be folk staffing the weekend and keeping an eye on things. It is an opportunity for people to have some quiet time out and some space to reflect on the Lord’s prayer in an interactive way. I look forward to hearing from you.
    Regards

    • Hi Glynis,

Thank you for your message. As we are a magazine, we only report on archaeology and do not have any artefacts ourselves. The Vicus website is here: http://vicus.yolasite.com/. You might like to try contact them on the email address at the bottom of that page.

      Best wishes,

      The CA Team
