Shaftesbury & District Historical Society owns and manages the Gold Hill Museum, Shaftesbury’s local history museum. This houses a collection exploring everything from Roman archaeology to the area’s agricultural and market heritage, local traditions, domestic life, cottage industries and Saxon roots.
Annual membership subscriptions help support the Gold Hill Museum, and is a wonderful way to learn about local history in the company of others with similar interests. New members are always welcome and will receive free admission to a series of six lectures on historical subjects from October through March, have priority use of the museum’s library for research and be encouraged to participate in the annual members’ afternoon of presentations on historical topics of choice.
The society are also involved in field walking, surveying and craft demonstrations, with small excavations carried out intermittently.
