Pontefract and District Archaeological Society

1 min read

Founded over fifty years ago, PontArch aims to ‘foster and promote the study of archaeology and its contribution to history, especially in and around Pontefract.’  Lucky enough to have several prominent archaeologists at the fore, the society runs frequent excavations, fieldwalking, Geophysical surveys and holds a winter lecture programme. They also have a Young Archaeologist’s Club and organise excursions to sites of interest.

In 2000, the society was the winner of the Pitt Rivers Award for their St Aidan’s sunken ship project.
