friends of castleshaw roman fortsThe Friends of Castleshaw Roman Forts is a group set up to help look after the Roman forts of the Castleshaw area and to get people involved in the various initiatives and events which have come out of the Castleshaw Working Party’s Conservation Management Plan.

In 1958, the importance of Castleshaw as an upland national heritage asset was recognised in its designation as a Scheduled Monument. Today, the site is a key educational resource boasting the nearby Castleshaw Centre which regularly organising visits and activities. It is also a popular recreation area for locals and visitors who come to explore the remains and enjoy the natural landscape and stunning views out across the reservoir and surrounding uplands. Unfortunately, the site’s  exposed location makes it prone to natural erosion and vulnerable to anti-social problems like vandalism and litter. Other issues also need to be addressed including the hazards posed by exposed trenches and spoil heaps from previous excavations, control of vegetation, footpath erosion, visitor access (particularly for the disabled), and site displays and interpretation. Volunteers are needed to help address these risks and to ensure the future of the forts.

In 2012 the Friends of Saddleworth Archaeological Trust (FoSAT) merged with the Friends of Castleshaw Roman Forts, details of which can still be found on the group’s website.
