Excavations at one of the trenches on the hillfort of Moel-y-Gaer, Bodfari, Denbighshire, North Wales [Photo Credit: © Moel-y-Gaer, Bodfari Project]

Moel-y-Gaer, Bodfari is a small hillfort in a beautiful location at the northern end of the Clwydian mountains. It is about 5 miles north-east of Denbigh overlooking the village of Bodfari. In previous years we have carried out extensive survey work and excavation is ongoing. In 2018 we shall be working on trenches located at a possible entrance through the western run of ramparts together with areas around the northern entrance. The rampart has proved to be spectacular with a stone-built box structure and a massive rock-cut external ditch.

Experienced supervisors will give training in excavation and recording methods so no previous experience is necessary. We cannot offer accommodation or food so any volunteers must be completely self-reliant. Access to the site is by climbing a steep hill so physical mobility is needed.

Hi, I’m a local chimney sweep so I do have work on during the 2weeks of the excavation but I was wondering if you needed anyone for the odd day? I could do the 26-28th July?

      Hi Tony,
Thanks for your message. This post is just a listing about the Bodfari dig, so I’m afraid we’re unable to answer your question. You might like to contact the one of the organisers, Gary Lock ( and John Pouncett (, whose details are listed at the top of the page.
      Best wishes,
      The CA Team
