Over the years, it has produced an embarrassment of archaeological riches – Roman coins, Anglo-Saxon burials, Bronze Age weapons, a cache of stone tools, and the remains of an abandoned medieval village that’s so well preserved you can still see its crofts, tofts and holloways from the air.
It has strong historical links with the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Deira, traces of an Iron Age settlement, and evidence of some impressive Roman ruins.
In 2017, we began exposing the medieval village, finding buildings, ceramic vessels, dress pins, spindle whorls and plenty more.
Each year, we aim to open a new area of excavation and in 2018 our focus will be on the Roman remains. There’s clearly something important here, and our aim is to find out what!
DigVentures runs multiple crowdfunded excavations around the country, and is a CIfA-endorsed fieldschool.
Our excavations are open to all levels of experience. You’ll receive our signature skills training, be able to try advanced techniques and excavate, record and interpret your finds alongside our friendly archaeologists.
Always wanted to try archaeology? Want to improve your skills? Now’s your chance to join the DigVentures community and be part of research at some of the UK’s most exciting sites!
