Our site is located on top of the cliff overlooking East Wear Bay in Folkestone, Kent, right on the edge of the Dover-Folkestone Heritage Coast. Unfortunately the area is prone to erosion. We are currently running an archaeological field school to record the archaeological remains at the site before they are lost forever. The site has long been known as a Roman Villa. Our work has revealed that it was also a late Iron Age trading settlement, as well as the production site for a major industry producing querns from the local sandstone.
The Field School is being led by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in conjunction with Kent Archaeological Society, Folkestone Research and Archaeology Group, Folkestone People’s History Centre, and Dover Archaeological Group.
We have set this field school up to provide training to anyone interested in archaeology; you do not have to be a student or have any archaeological experience to get involved. Our site is staffed by professional archaeologists from Canterbury Archaeological Trust with support from long term volunteers from local archaeology groups. Our training is the same we would give any member of staff on a commercial site and we use the BAJR ‘Archaeology Skills Passport’ to evidence your progress.
