The winners of the 2018 Heritage Angel Awards – a programme established in 2011 and supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation – have been announced. The aim of the awards, as outlined by the Foundation, is to ‘celebrate the achievements and determination of “unsung heroes”, the individuals and groups who show passion, commitment, and initiative in tackling often challenging restoration projects, who work tirelessly to protect their local historic buildings, and who keep our heritage alive and thriving for the next generation.’

The UK Overall Winner was the Foyle Civic Trust in Derry, part of the Walled City Partnership, which has worked to repair and restore more than 30 historic properties in the city – many of which were destroyed during the Troubles (pictured above). In addition to the Overall Award, each nation of the UK also recognised the winners of five categories: Best Rescue of a Historic Building or Place, Best Major Regeneration of a Historic Building or Place, Best Contribution to a Heritage Project by Young People, Best Craftsperson or Apprentice on a Heritage Rescue or Repair Project, and Best Heritage Research, Interpretation, or Recording.

England, Northern Ireland, and Wales also gave an award based on a public vote. In England, the people’s choice award – the Historic England Followers’ Favourite Award – was given to Wilton’s Music Hall in the East End of London, for its remarkable restoration into a theatre and performance venue while still retaining the building’s unique historical identity. In Northern Ireland, the restoration of Ormiston House – a 19th-century Scots Baronial house in Belfast – by its owners Ciara Denvir and Peter Boyle won the public’s vote. And in Wales (which took part in the programme for the first time this year) voters chose Insole Court – a Grade II*-listed mansion – and its £4.5m renovations (see p.66).
