The CARD Fund: still open for applications

A specialist grant that helps volunteer and community groups date their finds is encouraging projects to apply to their 2020 funding round ahead of its 30 November deadline.

Every year the Community Archaeology Radiocarbon Dating (CARD) fund, sponsored by Archaeological Research Services Ltd (www.archaeologicalresearchservices.com) and the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC), provides funding for ten radiocarbon dates from British archaeological sites which are organised by community archaeology groups.

So far these grants have produced 52 dates for 36 different projects across the UK, including producing the earliest date yet established for the occupation of the North Pennines (see CA 355), as well as establishing the age of an Anglo-Saxon cemetery in East Yorkshire, a series of rare Beaker-period clay beads in Derbyshire, and the burial of an early medieval Pictish man in coastal Scotland who appears to have been violently murdered.

‘Our funding has provided radiocarbon dates for projects from every part of the country and has helped community groups establish well-dated and valuable insights into fascinating details of British prehistory and history,’ said Luke Parker of Archaeological Research Services Ltd. ‘We warmly encourage applications from community archaeological groups for 2020.’

Prospective applicants should refer to the CARD Fund website at www.cardfund.org for further details and to make a simple application.
