The Department of Archaeological Sciences has been awarded "excellence" in the recent round of teaching quality assessments, and is rated 5 (out of 5*) for research. It combines these two strengths to offer degrees with a unique blend of archaeology and natural sciences. We offer undergraduate BSc courses in Archaeology, Archaeological Sciences, Forensic and Archaeological Sciences and Bioarchaeology and a BA Archaeology. These can be done in three years or over four years, spending a year on placement with an archaeological organisation or museum. The Department has about 200 undergraduate and 80 postgraduate students and 20 academic members of staff with training in Archaeology, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Field projects involving undergraduate and postgraduate students are currently running in Pompeii, South Asia, Shetland and mainland-Britain.

What they say:

"All Archaeological Sciences courses have an emphasis on practical experience, and are designed to develop transferable skills such as communication and IT, as well as provide a thorough grounding in what we believe to be the essentials of modern archaeology. Our success speaks for itself - we have a very high employment rate, especially in archaeology, for graduates from these courses, and our approach to teaching archaeological sciences is respected and admired world-wide. We also have a very high take up rate of graduates going on to do higher research degrees - usually in some specialised aspect of archaeology, but also into other applied sciences. All in all, we see our courses as offering challenging, but ultimately highly rewarding, University level education and training."

Bradford is unique in that it is the only university where the archaeology began in the Science Department, the Department of Physics. You must see archaeology first and foremost as a science to go there, but it also offers a sound training in the more traditional aspects of archaeology.

I have just read your guide to British Universities on the Current Archaeology pages - it is nice to know that there is a reference page for prospective archaeology students to begin their search for a place - I don't think there was such a thing in my day! I am a final year undergraduate student at Bradford - I hope you don't mind me e-mailing you with a few comments about the guide.

I think one of the most important things to stress about the department (which is now the Department of Archaeological Sciences, not part of the Physics Department) is its unparalleled implementation of a placement year for students. This means we get to experience jobs associated with archaeology for a whole year before we graduate (and if we are lucky earn some money whilst doing it!). This can often mean that we have the edge over other undergrad applicants when going for archaeological jobs. Whilst the department is primarily science based (all degrees are B.Sc.) the department now offers degrees in Archaeology, Archaeological Sciences and Bioarchaeology.

There are many specialisms within the department with much scope for "non-scientific" training. These include Roman archaeology, South-East Asia, Iberian archaeology, theoretical archaeology, conservation, archaeometallurgy and many others. The department scored a 5 in the 1996 research rating, and is very active in international research; holding conferences and numerous seminars on many and varied topics. Although each undergraduate year is now about 70-80 people Bradford has maintained the friendly feel of a small department. I would recommend Bradford to anyone looking for a practical training in archaeology with a view to going into the field - it gives you a broad basis to start on and provides you with all the support to follow your own interests. Plus Bradford is one of the cheapest places to live in the UK - an important factor now students are having to live off loans! I have really enjoyed being part of the friendly department at Bradford, and recommend it to anyone thinking of studying archaeology.
