A multidisciplinary group of scholars working in all aspects of medieval and renaissance studies. Meets once a year. Membership by invitation only.

The Society’s aim is to promote the study of all branches of Science and Natural History. That aim is pursued vigorously and time has allowed the society to build up an impressive foundation.

The Society, launched in February 1996, exists for the support of all aspects of toponymic studies in Scotland, and in particular the work of the Scottish Place-Name Database at the University of St. Andrews and the University of Edinburgh.

We organise local surveys and visits farther afield in summer, lectures in winter and an annual days symposium. We do not normally run excavations.

The Scottish Trust for Underwater Archaeology (SCO18418)was formed to promote the research, recording and preservation of Scotland’s underwater heritage with particular interest in crannogs. Towards realising these aims, the Trust carries out surveys, excavations, provides training, and aims to raise awareness through exhibition, education, and experimental archaeology.

The study of the vernacular buildings of Scotland, involving a programme of study days and weekends, and the publication of a journal, Vernacular Building, and a series of Regional and Thematic volumes. Survey and record remains of buildings.

MARS undertakes commercial and research surveys with metal detectors using the MARS system of fifty metre squares with finds recorded to the nearest metre.
