Association of Northumberland Local History Societies (ANLHS)

1 min read

northumberlandThe Association was originally founded in 1966 as the Northumberland Local History Society with the remit of drawing together groups and individuals interested in the history of the historic county of Northumberland and encouraging and supporting the formation of local history societies in the county. It provided a publication to record items of local historical interest that might otherwise remain unpublished and meetings on historical topics of county-wide importance.

ANLHS aims are:

  • to promote interest in the local history of the historic county of Northumberland
  • to encourage the formation of new local history societies or groups in the historic county of Northumberland
  • to encourage research and the recording of local history in the county
  • to provide support and guidance to member societies

Activities include:

  • an annual One Day School held at a different location in the county each year and based on a local theme
  • an annual Round the County Day hosted by a different member society each year
  • a Members’ Meeting in the spring of each year, usually held in St Nicholas’s Church Hall, South Gosforth, with a talk on a topical theme of local interest followed by time for members  to meet together and exchange ideas
  • an AGM held in the autumn of each year when members receive an update on the previous year’s activities and have the opportunity to hear a talk by a  respected, high-quality speaker

  1. Dr Constance Mary Fraser I have read about this distinguished historian and local history scholar and the bio attached to her name being attached to an annual annual lecture I live in a small market town in Dumfs and Galloway in SW Scotland . The dux of the local high school here in Newton Stewart in the year 1945 is listed as “. Constance Mary Fraser , Newcastle “. A dub for that year would then be about 17 and have been born in about 2025 This may just be a coincidence of course . But the name
or more relevantly the distant place of origin stands out on a largely local list of duxes However do you have any info as to whether Dr Fraser had any part of her education in Scotland ? Or even as to where her higher education was spent ?
    Many thanks Angus.
