Current Archaeology Live!  presents a special conference, in partnership with Durham University:

Hadrian’s Wall: 40 Years of Frontier Research

Hadrians-Wall

2-4 September 2016, at Durham University

Join us in September for a conference celebrating one of Britain’s greatest archaeological treasures. Hadrian’s Wall is the most famous example of a Roman frontier, but it is also the most mysterious. Far more massive than its peers, was Hadrian’s Wall a bulwark against unruly barbarians to the north, or simply a grandiose imperial vanity project? Forty years after the publication that initiated modern Wall studies – David J Breeze and Brian Dobson’s Hadrian’s Wall – a group of internationally renowned specialists will share the latest thinking on what the frontier was for, and how it shaped the lives lived in its shadow.

This exciting one-off event is modelled on Current Archaeology Live!, which is renowned for its stimulating, enjoyable, and accessible style. Our speakers will guide you through the military works, the communities of camp followers that the army attracted, and what this massive influx of people meant for the native population. Other highlights include charting the changes the Wall set in motion, the mind-boggling impact of provisioning thousands of soldiers, and the opportunity to hear an international take on our Wall. We will also discover the latest results from excavations under way in the military north.

  1. Hi, is there a contact email for the organiser of the Hadrian’s Wall: 40 Years of Frontier Research event?

    • Hi Nick,

As the conference is being organised jointly between Current Archaeology and Durham University, the best thing to do is to send an email to [email protected] – they will be able to help with most things, and will also be able to pass any queries on to the relevant person if not.

      Best wishes,

      The CA Team

  2. Will there be a publication released after the conference for those of us who may live on the other side of the world ??

    • Dear Terry,

Thank you for your query. While we don’t have a specific conference publication planned, each of the speakers will be talking on their own research areas and so have had related papers published elsewhere. We will be having a conference round-up in the magazine.

      Best wishes,

      The CA Team

    • Dear John

Many thanks for your message. I confirm that the Andante walking tour of Hadrian’s Wall will be leaving at approximately 9am on the 2nd September and will be collecting members of the tour group from both Collingwood and Hatfield colleges before travelling up to Vindolanda.

If you have any further questions then you can get in contact by either telephoning us on 020 8819 5580 or email us at [email protected]

I hope this answers your question and we look forward to seeing you later on in the year!

      With best wishes

  4. Now on the tour, thanks to the very helpful lady in the CP office who sorted it out:-) I’ve also got my accommodation and train tickets booked – bring it on !

  5. Any news on whether the café in the Calman Centre will be open during lunch breaks? Also, will we receive tickets and/or schedule in the post before the event? Would like to know when registration will be open.

Really looking forward to the conference!

    • Dear Pat

Many thanks for your message and I am pleased that you are looking forward to September! The Calman Learning Centre cafe will be open between 8:30-4:30 on both Saturday and Sunday. I can also confirm that on Friday we sent out your conference pack which will include an updated conference itinerary, a map of the local area and conference name badges which will act as your ticket.

      With best wishes
