Jeffrey May Writing Prize
Can you write for Current Archaeology?
Last year, we launched the Current Archaeology Awards at Archaeology 2009 in Cardiff, So many responses came pouring in that we nearly ran out of time to read them all! With that in mind, this year’s Jeffrey May Award competition is opening a bit earlier. The Jeffrey May Award is named in honour of Jeffrey May, an issue editor for Current Archaeology and a long-term friend and supporter. The award, for the best article submitted by a new writer for either Current Archaeology or Current World Archaeology magazine, consists of a £1,000 prize and publication of the article.
Content and scope of articles
Our magazines are essentially concerned with news. Articles should deal with ‘current’ archaeology, meaning work that has been completed recently. The writer may be reporting on his/her own work, or work undertaken as part of a team - in which case, the article must be approved by the director of the project and the source of the information. We would like to encourage team
leaders to recognise that this is a valuable exercise in teaching the presentation of archaeology to the public.
Procedure
• Outline proposals must be submitted by 15 November 2009.
• The final date for submission of articles is1 December 2009.
• Articles must be between 1,500 and 3,000 words in length and should contain examples of any illustrations available, or that can be obtained.
• Alternatively, you may submit an outline proposal. This should be between 100 and 200 words in length, and state that you are the principal, or that you have obtained the approval of your source.
