2009 is the 12th year of digging the multi-period site near Mellor Church, (Mellor, Stockport) which includes the discovery of Mesolithic flints, an Iron Age Hillfort, a larger Bronze Age enclosure and postholes of a medieval hall.
It will complete the excavation of accessible areas of the Old Vicarage garden and will be the last occasion when the year’s work on the OV site is open for viewing. The area with a section of Iron Age ditch, which is being given to Stockport to remain open for public viewing, should be almost complete.
Finds will be on display in the Parish Centre together with video presentations – and refreshments. There will also be information on the excavations at Shaw Cairn, where 80 amber beads were found, Oldknow’s Mellor Mill and other work of the Mellor Heritage Project. In the field there will be demonstrations by Ancient Arts, the potter John Hudson, Mulberry Dyers and Marie Widger with her team from Stockport Museums.
