Colchester Archaeological Group are conducting their final excavation at Marks Hall Estate in Essex. As part of the Historical Research Project run by Essex University, and at the request of the Trustees of Marks Hall Estate, the excavation hopes to identify the location of the footprint of a lost Jacobean Mansion, and to seek evidence of earlier occupation.
Volunteers will primarily be involved in hands-on excavation work, but there will also be opportunities to participate in surveying, finds processing, planning and drawing. Interested parties will receive briefing notes by the site co-ordinator.
This excavation is free for volunteers, and includes all equipment and training. Participants are asked to bring their own meals and organise suitable accommodation. There are no age restrictions and no previous experience is required.

I am hoping to take a handful of A level students on a dig and wondered whether we might be able to visit in w/b June 11th.
Yours, hopefully,

Dear Carolyn,
The best thing to do is to contact the project directly, as they will be able to advise you whether this is possible at their dig. It’s run by the Colchester Archaeological Group, and their contact details can be found in the grey box at the top of this page.
Best of luck!
